My paintings are predominantly inspired by the rich heritage of ancient Egyptian art with its wide range of subject matter and its authentic stylization of the human figure and other visual representations of nature. This was a style that lasted for thousands of years and was consistently expressed in mural painting, wall reliefs, sculpture and architecture. One particular period that interested and inspired me from an aesthetic point of view was the new style that emerged during the rule of Akhenaten, a pharaoh from the Eighteenth dynasty. He challenged the belief in multiple gods to proclaim a monotheistic religion of worshipping the sun as the sole and true god - a liberating revolution that profoundly impacted the Egyptian art of the period. New stylistic norms were produced with a strong naturalistic deviation from the rigid conventions that were strictly imposed by the clergy. This new liberating spirit gave me the motivation to re-examine this transformation with a modernist, contemporary approach without appropriating the actual images and motifs.
